The Suksdorfia and South Sound Chapters are preparing an amazing Study Weekend event in the Klickitat County area of Washington, including the Columbia Gorge and the heart of the Cascades Mountains. 24 hikes, 2 Key Note speakers and workshops including how to use the new Plant List Database, and more will be a part of this year’s event.
From the snows of Mount Adams to the deep, rain-forest valleys of the Wind River to the wide dry woodlands skirting the Klickitat River, there are many different habitats in the Columbia Gorge, diversified by combinations of elevation, precipitation, topography, geology and more. The Columbia Gorge is a parkland of floral diversity, this place where the eastern and western slopes of the mountains meet. One making a drive through crosses from west-side Douglas-fir forests, past montane environments rising almost sheer 5,000 feet up from the mighty river, through dry stands of ponderosa and Oregon oak (Quercus garryana) until the cliffs ease back and the sky widens to reveal a vast shrub-steppe of sagebrush, rabbitbrush and stands of pungent juniper stretching east toward the Great Basin –all in the span of 80 miles.
The WNPS Study Weekend event will be based out of Hood River, OR and Bingen, WA. WNPS is securing a block of rooms at the Conference center and hopes all will register within this block.
